The Cartography Service of the National Library of Spain preserves one of the most important cartographic collections in the country, whose origins date back to the Royal Library founded by Philip V. This heritage was formed through significant historical collections, such as the Mendoza Collection, the maps produced by the López family, and numerous manuscript maps. Since 1958, the Library has received all maps published in Spain under the Legal Deposit Law, ensuring the preservation of modern cartography. In addition, it has housed the collection of the Royal Geographical Society since 1971. Together, these holdings reflect the evolution of geographical knowledge in Spain.
